An IP address, or Internet protocol address, is a unique address that networked devices (like your computer) use to identify and communicate with other devices (like other computers, servers, routers, printers, etc.) over a network (like the Internet).
Each device must have its own address that is unique within the scope of the specific network to which it's attached. Some IP addresses are intended to be unique within the scope of the global Internet (the world wide web), while others need only to be unique within the scope of an home or small office network (local area network).
IP addresses are managed and created by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. The IANA generally allocates super-blocks to regional Internet registries, who in turn allocate smaller blocks to Internet service providers.
